A Case Study of the Secret Cults Effect on the Society and Among the Yoruba Youths

The study is focused on a comprehensive evaluation of the secret cults in the Yoruba land and the effects on the society and among their youths. Almost everyone who has written about the secret societies has not attempted the origin in Yoruba land, which is not yet satisfactory. Description of the phenomenon is yet to be attained. This is becausethere is so many vibrant surrounding the central facts of the existence of the society that what willidentify one society will not fit another. Not all secret societies are entirely secret, many of the members may be known such as (REFORMED OGBONI CONFRATERNITY, AWO, PYRATE ONFRATERNITY, FREEMANSON, E.T.C.). Their major objectives may be stated publicly, their teachings may be available to all and to protect certain interest, on like (OSO, AJE, MERE, OGBANJE), which are saucy, wicked and hurtful to the human nature. In Yoruba primitives’ tribal initiations, which attract many civilized secret societies, all adults are members.

This latter fact means that if the society is working not against established authority, but for it, removing validity of the argument that all secret societies are dedicated it the destruction of properly constituted authority. It is interesting to note how youths of this strange branch of human activity have tended to miss the fact that secret societies is an amalgam of many elements which are found in ordinary life. There is the share of the experience of the rituals and the belief (the myth) of the society. Every clan, nation, family has such myths ad rituals in yorubaland which has come to have a special meaning for the participants. Secret societies veracity among the Yoruba youths is the respite and indeed the entire nation appeared to have gained from menace of secret cults.
