Idofin, Otun-Ekiti and Ile-Ife Relationship

A case study of Idofin, otun ekiti and Ile ife .Idofin is historically related to Otun ekiti and Ile ife according to the people oral tradition. They migrated from Ile ife to Otun ekiti before finally settling in their present place of abode. At Ile ife,Odofin ward at Ilode quarters bears a similar name to Idofin compound at Otun ekiti and Idofin in Kwara state. From oral traditions this similarity in names is by no means accidental but rather an indication of a strong historical connection between Idofin ,Otun ekiti and Ile Ife. Thare are other evidence to support this assertion. For Example, at Ile Ife one of the most important rivers is named Omi-Opa and at Otun - Ekiti there's Omipa tiver at Awara area, while the name Omipa is also given to a river at Idofin. Omipa is a shortened form of Omi-Opa given its literary meaning. There's also a similarity in the praise names (Oriki) of the people of Idofin and Otun-Ekiti. The people of the two areas are addressed as "Mobba Otun omo a p ewo b'aruko" (for Otun-Ekiti) and Idofin Mobba, omo a p'ewo b'aruko meaning "the descendants of those who sacrifices yam-pottage to the handle of hoe". It is a general belief in Yorubaland that when two or morte societies share common praise names (Oriki), there's a strong historical link between them. The common use of the Mobba title by Idofin and Otun also indicates a historical link between the two communities (His Royal Highness, Oba Michael Adeyeye, Aribani II. 1987. Pers. Comm.) Ore is considered as one of the important gods in Ile Ife. It has a grove and a shrine at Ife and stone emblem at the Museum in Ife.
