The Diminution of Old Oyo: The Dahomey Example |
The roots of the ebb of the gargantuan Old Oyo, which was one of the most powerful empires of the littoral area of West Africa, was partly entrenched in the revolt of the kingdom of Dahomey. In a profound sense, the subjugation of Dahomey by Old Oyo in 1748 paved the way for seventy years of utter abasement and domination. Essentially, Dahomey paid tributes to the Alafin annually, which, of course, buttressed Old Oyo’s economic and political influence within the region. Nevertheless, Dahomey grew increasingly restive towards its subjection to Old Oyo. As a consequence, in 1823, Dahomey successfully revolted against Old Oyo under Gezo, thereby breaking the yoke of Old Oyo’s rule. Interestingly, this thwarted Old Oyo’s economic and political dominance in the sense that Dahomey ceased to pay tributes and other kingdoms rose against Old Oyo’s masterful influence in the region. |
