A Case Study of Egungun Eyo |
One of the most controversial study of contemporary issue is the tracing of the origin of a people and the evolvement of culture. The growing complexities in relation to the sources of history and the inter-play among the sources made it difficult to take a source more seriously than the other. This connote that all the sources are very important but one cannot be said to be more important than the other. Thus, the origin of a people could only be linked to various variables in terms of Oral, Tradition, Written records, Linguistic studies, Anthropology, Sociology and analysis of Archeological findings. The history of the Yorubas is very obscure and shrewded in Myths and Legends. Many attempts have been made to be particularly specific about the origin of the Yorubas. The most popular one is the Oduduwa dynasty which could be linked to historyof migration. That the progenator of the Yorubas ODUDUWA migrated from the East Specifically from ARABIA. This was said to be a period when the idol worshippers around MECCA was sent away. The leader of the group was known as NIMROD popularly referred to as LAMURUDU, The son was ODUA which finally made his journey to ILE-IFE. At Ile-Ife, ODUDUWA met some people as time went on He got married and had a son called OKANBI who eventually had seven children. Today, the seven children of OKANBI has scattered to form various kingdoms. These kingdoms are now referred to as Yoruba Kingdoms. On the issue of the above, origin through migration, It could be argued that the Yoruba culture evolve from the mixtures of the migrants and the original settlers. The cultural integration evolve over time and changes periodically because of its dynamism which suggest that as it applies to other cultures the perceived |
Yoruba culture of today could not be said to be entirely Yorubas because there had been some infilteration from other cultures. Naturally, the origin of the Yorubas can also be linked with their ancestral belief and from ths spiritual realm. This implies the tracing of the Yorubas to the Myth on ORUNMILA as the supernatural that created the whole world starting from Ile-Ife. This assertion couldbe verified from one of the ODUS of IFA and currently in the ORIKI of the Ife's "Ife ooye, ibi ojumo tii mo wa." If the true historical origin of the Yorubas should be juxtaposed it would be seen that there were areas of contrast and comparism but what is iimportant to our study is to really delve to a source of the origin and how the Yoruba culture evolved over time.CULTURE OF THE YORUBAS.The culture of the Yorubas have a wholistic approach which link everything to the ancestors. It is not out of place to say that the Yoruba culture is unique considering these variables; Ancestral worship, Language, Drumming, Dancing, Egungun(Masqurade), Deities, tribal marks, occupation, Defence System, Mode of dressing, Food and the ability to effectively deal or adapt to their physical environment and equally the dynamism in the social environment.CASE STUDY: EYO MASQURADE About the cultural linkage of the Yoruba with the ancestors is the use of Egungun. The Egungun Eyo is popular among the IJEBUS and the AWORIS but mostly used today on Lagos Island Nigeria. It has its own remarkable cultural importance apart from sustaining and promoting the linkage to the ancestors with the performance of some rites and the making of ceremonies to appease the gods of the land. Equally, It has recall the most celebrated traditional rites on Lagos Island Nigeria. |
