Women in Hindustani Music:Diva Lighting the Way
Padmabhushan Girija Devi in Concert With Arup Chattopadhyay (tabla), Rupan Sarkar
(harmonium, vocals),
SudhaDutta and Amie Maciszewski (tanpuras)
Girija Devi, a living legend at 75, is one of
India’s leading classical vocalists and the doyenne of the Benares Gharana
(stylistic community). Her vast repertoire includes the classical genre khyal,
as well as her specialties, the lyrical thumri-dadra, the lightning-fast tappa,
the charming seasonal song types from her native Benares, and the movingly spiritual
bhajan. Calling her “a Hindustani diva,” the Chicago Tribune has
compared the finesse and emotional intensity of Girija Devi’s performance
to that of jazz stalwarts such as Ella Fitzgerald.
