Requirements/Grading and Evaluation

Participation in Class Discussions. 15%
Many of you have already shown a good facility to contribute to the exploration of the texts. Those who are just not up to talking may help themselves somewhat by the Bulletin Board posting days and by doing well on quizzes.

Reading Quizzes. Best 6 of 8 grades. 15%
This should help to insure that people come to class prepared with the reading.

Brief Presentation on History, Culture, Biography
. 10%
The presentations should last about 5 minutes. It should be accompanied by a 2-3 page written report on the research you’ve done for the presentation. These should be a fairly polished 2-3 pages, not a sereies of notes, and certainly not an internet cut and paste job. Extra grade consideration given to those who utilize non-web material for research.

Short paper on experiencing India in Austin 10%
There are a host of South Asia related performances throughout the fall, both on and off campus. Help keep the class community alerted to these events.

Paper # 1. (3-4 pages). 20%
Due on October 29 or before (no penalty for handing in your paper early). Papers delivered on or prior to October 20 may be revised after instructor’s assessment. Each Friday beginning on Sept. 17 we will distribute handouts suggesting possible paper topics. You may develop your own. Papers should helpthe reader of the paper gain a greater understanding of the literature being analyzed. Topics may include close readings of single texts, comparisons between two or more texts, readings of the influence of the myths in modern texts, analyses of films and the texts the films are based upon, etc. Papers will be graded on clarity, insight, style.

Final Paper. (4-5 pages) 30%
See note for paper #1. It is expected that the majority of these papers will focus on issues that arise in the section of the course on Two major Novels. Due on Monday, December 6 by 5 p.m. in my office.
NO LATE PAPERS.
