M. Olgin (psuedonym of Myshe Yoysef Novomiski) was born near Kiev, and was
one of the leaders of the Jewish workers party, the Bund. He published
many political essays, one of the earliest Yiddish literary anthologies, and
short stories by the time he came to America to stay in 1921. At this time, he
breaks off from the Yiddish newspaper, the Forward, where he had been a
journalist for years, and becomes a leader in the formation of a Yiddish
communist cultural life. In addition to founding and editing the Freiheit, he
edits the Yiddish literary journal, Der hamer [pictured below]. He
also helped found the "Protelpen," the Communist writers' organization,
in 1929.
