George Washington

George Washington

Revolutionary War General George Washington served with James Madison as delegates from Virginia to the Constitutional Convention. Washington presided over the Convention, and although he is not recorded as having spoken much, his popularity and the fact that the delegates realized he would undoubtedly be elected the first President influenced the way that office was structured. He was unanimously elected by the Electoral College to the office of President upon ratification of the Constitution.
