Justice John Marshall

As the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Marshall penned the decision in Marbury v. Madison, stating that "a legislative act contrary to the Constitution is not law." This decision granted the Supreme Court the right of judicial review, or the right to declare legislation unconstituional.
