The Origins of the Donkey and Elephant

The Origins of the Donkey and Elephant

Although President Andrew Jackson was known to have used the image of a donkey, Thomas Nast, a cartoonist for Harper's Weekly, is credited with permanently attaching the donkey to the Democratic party, as well as the elephant to the Republican party, with these two cartoons. The 1870 cartoon on the left depicts Northern Democrats (nicknamed copperheads) attacking Edward Stanton, Lincoln's Secretary of War. The 1874 cartoon on the right depicts an elephant (labeled "Republican Vote") which is being frightened by a donkey in lion's clothing.
