This is a map of the United States depicting the outcome of the 1968 presidential election. Although not constitutionally mandated, the U.S. political system has been dominated by two major parties for almost a century: the Democrats and the Republicans. On occasion a third party candidate garners a significant measure of the vote. In 1968, George Wallace ran for president as the candidate of the American Independent party, winning 46 electoral votes, all from southern states.
