(El Senor de los Cielos)

Performance by Mariachi Frontera, Ojinaga, Chihuahua, 11/01/97 Videotaped field recording by Prof. James Nicolopulos

I'm going to sing you a ballad about a true story, in memory of a man named Amado Carrillo. He wanted to alter his appearance so he could fool the government, but he didn't manage to pull it off because he died during the operation. He was the "Czar" of cocaine, the master of the Mafia, he didn't respect the Mexican government nor the American authorities. The drug trafficker I'm talking about was called "the Lord of the Skies," he smuggled cocaine to the United States. One time in Costa Rica, inside a restaurant, he was dining with his wife at his side. The federal police surrounded him in order to take him in. They knew he was a seasoned, fearless fighter, and would be hard to catch. The commandant shouted: "Give up, Amado Carrillo! We have you surrounded and there is no escape!" The answer that he gave them was a hail of bullets. Since he was a seasoned, fearless fighter, he succeeded in breaking out of their trap. Here at the border in Ojinaga he also lived for a time, in league with Pablo Acosta he began his drug-trafficking career. When Pablo Acosta fell, Amado Carrillo took over the reins to put the finishing touches on the empire that Pablo had built up here. Twenty-five billion dollars was the money he had accumulated, as well as numerous properties and mansions that he had in his possession. "With that I say farewell, they are going to bury me now, in my beloved Guamuchil, the place of my birth."
