Description

This french movie poster is an excellent example of the ever-present disconnect that exists between languages. To anyone familiar with classic American Cinema, it is instantly apparent that this poster is an advertisement for the colossal 1975 blockbuster "Jaws". However, due to possible connotation implications or the fact that a direct translation merely does not exist in the french language, this poster bears the lengthy title "Les Dents de la Mer" or the Teeth of the Sea. Thanks to globalization, the language barrier between English and French seems to diminish more and more every day, yet cases such as this poster serve to highlight the concept that every language will always retain a certain unique identity.
