Of Crimes and Punishments

Cesare Bonesana, Marchese Beccaria

Our primary interest in this text is that Bentham cites it in discussing reward and punishment in The Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, the Rationale of Punishment, and The Rationale of Reward. Beccaria's Introduction is probably where Bentham came by the phrase ``the greatest happiness of the greatest number'' (Intro, para 2).

There is a brief biography of Beccaria in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
