Corridos of Narcotraffickers

Narcocorridos are ballads performed in the traditional Mexican manner with lyrics alluding to drugs and the harsher aspects of modern life. A good number of narcocorridos tell the tales of the lives, deaths, adventures, and ethical codes of traffickers, drug lords, and members of the mafia in the regions where cultivation of poppy and marijuana is prevalent. One area in particular is commonly referred to as La Junta de los Rios, formed by the cities of Ojinaga, Chihuahua and Presidio, Texas.

Traffickers' corridos began to emerge only after the activities of traffickers were largely tolerated, and in most cases, officially protected by Mexican officials. It reflects the movement of the traffickers into a different status &endash; one where traffickers were recognized by society and accepted by other groups, both in the region of La Junta de los Rios, and elsewhere. Most recently, there have been several corridos to come out of La Junta de los Rios of, or relating to, the late Pablo Acosta, in what may be called a corrido cycle.

Widely known narcotraffickers to gain their origin in Ojinaga:

Martin "El Shorty" Lopez

Pablo Acosta
