This is the photo of a model of the master plan city in the Tianjin Economic Development Area. With so much population, they have to be very efficient with their space in order to maximize their environment.
A centrally planned economy is certainly well equipped to plan cities. In this case I thought the difference between the model and my experience with the city was striking. Maybe sometimes what looks good in a model doesn't always translate to what feels good on the ground. Even so, I'd be interested to go back to Tianjin in 5 years and see if the vision for the city as displayed by the model is getting closer to reality.
I think a lot of the cities in development more recently have an advantage over older cities, since they have the benefit of proper planning from the beginning.
The LED city was definitely very cool. Extremely thorough and detailed.
