Description

Walking the streets of Shanghai towards a national museum we passed a government building with a series of military guards parading the grounds. I took this photo with a small fear that my camera would be taken because the building was not allowed to be photographed. Throughout China we witnessed a ton of police and military members, particularly in larger cities. Rather than portray a sense of security, I feared these men because of their seemingly unchecked authoritarian presence.

The government building did

The government building did seem to exhude authority.  At the same time, the Chinese people sorta seemed used to it.  I shared some of John's ambivalence and fear, but from what I could tell of the locals - and they were very difficult for me to read - they just treated this authority as a matter of course.
