David Hume

David Hume was not a Utilitarian, classical or otherwise, but his ethics certainly had something in common, and Bentham explicitly acknowledged him as an influence.

Both Bentham and Sidgwick referred to Hume's writings and accordingly we will have assorted Hume texts and extracts therefrom here. At present, we just have two essays and some nibbles from the History of England.

Essays, Moral, Political and Literary

  1. Part I, Essay 5. Of the Origin of Government
  2. Part II, Essay 12 Of the Social Contract
