Robert L. Hardgrave, Jr. is the Louann and Larry Temple Centennial Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin. A specialist in the domestic and international politics of South Asia, he taught at UT in the departments of Government and Asian Studies from 1967 until his retirement in 2001.

Bob Hardgrave grew up in West Texas, graduating from Sonora High School in a class of 31 and attended the University of Texas for his B.A. (1960). He then spent a year in India before beginning graduate work at the University of Chicago, where he completed his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science. He was an Assistant Professor of Government at Oberlin College in Ohio, 1966-1966, and came to the University of Texas in 1967, where he taught courses on South Asia, with an India focus, and in his other area of specialization in government--American civil liberties and constitutional law. He has served as a consultant for the U. S. Department of State and is Senior Policy Adviser on South Asia for Political Risk Services, Inc.

With many trips to South Asia, Hardgrave has pursued a number of research projects and has written extensively on India. His most recent book is on the life and work of the Flemish artist F. Baltazard Solvyns, who lived in Calcutta from 1791 to 1803 and produced some 300 etchings depicting "the Hindoos" in their occupations and cultural life.

Beyond his academic interests, Hardgrave is a great fan of classical music, especially opera, and has a serious interest in art. He enjoys travel (Bhutan, Vietnam, and Patagonia among recent trips) and is an avid birder.
