Our first night in Beijing the majority of our class went to the night market. First vendor - snakes! We dared John to try it and this was his reaction. I think this exemplifies context because as Americans, we were initially turned off and predisposed to not like a food that seems so extreme. I bet John went into his first bite thinking, "this is going to taste repulsive"...and it looks like that is exactly what he thought it was!
The night market was very interesting to see! Although, I wonder how much of this was for American tourists and how much of it is actually eaten by locals. I was so impressed John tried the snake!
I agree with Kim, I think that most of the delicacies at the night market are for tourist. That being said I would be interested to know what they eat in more rural parts of the country where there are less tourists and less access to large food distributors.
