Using the following pictures as a guide, this is how the system works.
Microwaves transmitted from an Iridium handset are received by the
nearest satellite. The call is then "bounced off" or transferred
to other satellites to the nearest satellite to the PSTN (Public-Switched
Telephone Network) upon which the number dialed resides. The call
is then downloaded through one of the 12 world gateways where it is routed
through local PSTN lines to reach the called party.
Detail of Global Coverage - Iridium encompasses a
total blanket of worldwide coverage. The coverage includes 6 orbits of
11 satellites each.
