This paper is a study of several individuals who either fled Ethiopia, or who were able to persuade the ruling authorities to let them leave in the period mostly covering the mid-1970s into the early 1990s. It will be part of a book on Ethiopian refugees who came to the greater Washington D. C. area in this period. Historically there had been close ties between the African-American community in the United States and the mostly Christian Amhara people in Ethiopia.
