Course Descriptions

Advanced Conversation I (JPN 325K)
  • Not open to native speakers of Japanese
  • Prerequisites: JPN 412L or the equivalent with a grade of at least C
  • Course Objectives:
    • The primary goal of the course is to acquire communicative competence, which requires both accurate and
      culturally appropriate usage of the Japanese language
    • A variety of conversational styles including the use of honorific and humble forms and men's and women's colloquial speech will be covered
    • Video clips from Japanese TV shows, dramas, commercials, and animation will be used to enhance the students' communicative competence as well as socio-cultural competence
  • Texts/Readings: An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese (1994) by Akira Miura and Naomi H. McGloin The Japan Times
  • Grading/Requirements: (May vary) Class participation, Quizzes, Homework, Oral Tests, Role-Play, Short Speech, Written Tests, and Course Project


Advanced Conversation II (JPN 325L)
  • Not open to native speakers of Japanese
  • Prerequisites: JPN 325K or the equivalent with a grade of at least C
  • Course Objectives:
    • This course is the continuation of JPN325K
    • The primary goal of the course is to increase communicative competence, which requires both accurate and culturally appropriate usage of the language
    • A variety of conversational styles including the use of honorific and humble forms and men's and women's colloquial speech will be covered
    • Video clips from Japanese TV shows, dramas, commercials, and animation will be used to enhance the students' communicative competence as well as socio-cultural competence
    • Students will engage in discussions on various cultural and social topics in order to deepen their knowledge on Japan, its culture, and its people

  • Grading/Requirements: (May vary) Class participation, Quizzes, Homework, Oral Tests, Speaking/Listening Assignment, Short Speech, Written Tests, and Course Project
