Course Descriptions

Practical Reading in Advanced Japanese
(JPN 330 Fall)
  • Not open to native speakers of Japanese
  • Prerequisites: JPN 320L or the equivalent with a grade of at least C
  • Course Objectives:
    • The course will help students develop a wide variety of reading skills such as scanning, skimming, prediction, reading for details, and reading for meaning
    • Students will read various materials: essays, comic strips, short stories, information on websites, magazine and newspaper articles, etc.
    • The course is repeatable for credit
  • Texts/Readings: Enjoyable Task Reading in Japanese: Pre-advanced by Bonjinsha
  • Grading/Requirements: Quizzes, Homework, Participation, Written Tests, Reading Assignment, and Course Project


Advanced Readings in Modern Japanese (JPN 330 Spring)
  • Not open to native speakers of Japanese
  • Prerequisites: JPN 320L or the equivalent with a grade of at least C
  • Course Objectives:
    • This course is designed for students who have attained an advanced level of proficiency. In addition to newspaper articles in the main textbook, students will read various authentic materials, such as short stories, essays and magazine articles
    • The course helps students expand both linguistic and sociolinguistic knowledge, as well as their vocabulary and kanji knowledge
    • Class will be conducted entirely in Japanese in order to promote the maximum use of the target language
    • The course is repeatable for credit
