Present Tense-

Pronominal Verbs-

In this module we will study the present tense of verbs that are conjugated with a reflexive pronoun as well as a subject pronoun. Also, please notice the reflexive pronoun se before the infinitive. These verbs are called pronominal verbs. Depending on which ones they are and how they are used, some of them are reflexive, others are reciprocal, and several are reflexive in form only and are described as always or idiomatically pronominal.

Reflexive Verbs:
Notice that the object of each of the following verbs is the same person as the subject: s'amuser (to have a good time, enjoy oneself), se coucher (to go to bed, lie down), s'habiller (to get dressed), se laver (to wash oneself, bathe), and se réveiller (to wake up). You might compare the action of these verbs to an image in a mirror that is reflected back to the subject or person looking in the mirror, or even a boomerang that comes back to the person who throws it.

Reciprocal Verbs:
The subject of these verbs is always plural because more than one person is required to complete the action, which is performed on each other. A couple of examples of these verbs are s'aimer (to love each other) and se battre (to fight).

Always or Idiomatically Pronominal Verbs:
These verbs are pronominal in form. They are just that way, and usually the reflexive pronoun cannot be explained logically. Here are some examples:

se souvenir de (to remember)
se rendre compte de (to realize)
se plaindre de (to complain)
se servir de (to use)
s'endormir (to fall asleep)

Some idiomatically pronominal verbs have a similar form that is not pronominal, and when they do, the meanings are completely different. Notice the examples in the following chart.

Infinitives- English Translation- Pronominal Infinitives- English Translation of Pronominal Verbs-
demander- to ask- se demander- to wonder-
appeler- to call- s'appeler- to call oneself, to be named-

servir- to serve- se servir- to use-
plaindre- to pity- se plaindre- to complain-
sentir- to smell- se sentir- to feel-

We will now see how easy it is to use pronominal verbs in the present tense. These verbs are conjugated just like other verbs except reflexive pronouns corresponding to each person follow the subject pronouns. When a verb is negative, place the reflexive pronoun right after the ne.

Here are the French reflexive pronouns.
