Case study: sound patterns in Turkish

In this module, we will explore a small selection of sound patterns in Turkish, including voicing and palatal alternations in the obstruent class, vowel harmony, and vowel length alternations. Our discussions can be reached through the links to the left.

The sound recordings for this module on Turkish were provided by Dr. Yildiray Erdener, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the The University of Texas at Austin where he has taught Turkish for fourteen years. Dr. Erdener is a native speaker of the standard variety of Turkish spoken in Istanbul. He earned a PhD in Folklore & Ethnomusicology from the University of Indiana at Bloomington 1987.
