Small Arms and Accentuation of Internal Conflicts and Displacement in Nigeria since the New Political Dispensation

Olayemi Akinwumi, Department of History, Nasarawa State University, Nigeria

Due attention has not been paid to the role of small and light arms in conflicts and internal displacement in Nigeria since the beginning of the fourth republic in 1999. The failure to consider the proliferation and use of small and light arms in these conflicts and internal displacement has made it almost impossible to stop ethno-religious conflicts and internal displacement in the country. This paper therefore intends to achieve two major objectives: examine the proliferation of small and light arms in the country, and examine the linkage between the use of small and light arms and conflicts and internal displacement in Nigeria since 1999.
