The Migration of the Mythological, Legendary, and Historical Ôrànmíyàn as Depicted in Yorùbá Drama

L. O. Arohunmolase and Beatrice Fàtí Arohunmolase, Department of Yorùbá, School of Languages, Adeyemi College of Education, Nigeria

There are mythological, legendary, and historical accounts of the migration of Ôrànmíyàn who is accepted by the Yorùbá as the last son of Odùduwà. This paper examines these accounts of migration in order to succinctly analyze the depiction of Ôrànmíyàn’s migration as depicted in )j9jol5’s video play entitled Ôrànmíyàn. The history, legends, and myths of human settlements in Africa, Nigeria in general, and Yorùbá land in particular, are always replete with stories of migration from either near places or distant proto – settlements. The history, myths, and legends of Ôrànmíyàn, the acclaimed seventh child of Odùduwà, the Progenitor of the Yorùbá race, are, therefore, no exception of the patterns of the migrations in Nigeria or Africa. There are stories of the migration of Ôrànmíyàn at different periods of the Yorùbá race in places that have now developed as centres of socio – economic and political activities such as Benin, Edo State, Ilé – Ifê, Ôzun State, and Old Ôyö, Ôyö State, in Yorùbá Land. The major purpose of this paper is to determine the characteristic features of the migration accounts of the mythological, legendary, and historical Ôrànmíyàn as depicted in Yorùbá drama ()j9jol5’s video play Ôrànmíyàn), produced by Golden Link Productions and Communications Limited, A Subsidiary of YEM – KEM INTERNATIONAL, NIGERIA LIMITED.
